Its a decision that employers have to make and its probably one of the toughest orders to have to hand out to that employee of yours that has been around for a long time, has put in some great work & has some good memories to share but unfortunately for the good of the company it is sometimes a decision you have to make.
Today the CEO at hand is you and what you are in charge of today is to protect is your body's health & wellness.
Do you have that one person that you have kept around you for entirely too long or that one person who doesn't quite understand when to leave so they over stay their welcome?
How is that working out for you?
And lets get those excuses out the way now on why you can't FIRE YOUR DOCTOR today because I know you have them.
- I have been seeing them forever
- They are very nice
- I don't want to have to learn a new doctor/office staff
Its important to get these main excuses out of the way because you won't even think about making a change like FIRING YOUR DOCTOR without making sure these roadblocks are addressed.
“I have been seeing my doctor FORVER”
This excuse makes it seem that because of the amount of time you have spent with your doctor that they can't be doing a bad job & unfortunately that is just not true. When you start thinking about your health & wellness goals you have to decide if this person is the right fit for you. In medicine we sometimes forget that the patients are our customers & at any moment if we get too comfortable they can vanish. (i.e taxi cab industry before Uber) So if we aren't consistent in making sure we're doing everything right by the customer than the customer should leave.
“They are very nice”
For many of you going to see a doctor is a scary thing so it becomes a good thing when the person you have to see actually has a nice personality to ease some fears. I understand that but just because they are nice doesn't mean that are the best fit to for your health goals. Sometimes the “nice” workers are too nice and can become afraid to ruffle some feathers when needed be. I had a patient who was overweight & needed to work on her diet but after 2 follows up she wasn't being compliant so I had to become “the bad guy” and let he know the it was my way or the highway (she got in line).
“I don't want to have to learn a new doctor/office staff”
Like most of us when we first go to the doctor we are a little scared to tell all our business and it takes some time to really feel open enough to tell your doctor all your problems. So I can see why you don't want to have to start that process over but you are going to admit that is wait time in the lobby, lightning speed appointments and that feeling of leaving confused & unsatisfied really worth it?
What do you have to lose?
EVERYTHING!!!!!
I don't think I can stress this enough that not knowing when to get rid of the person in charge of your care can kill you. Many of you are in a doctor/patient relationship that you don't want to see end even tough you are clearly getting the wrong end of the deal. Remember that in a relationship there is give & take but for many you have been doing all the giving but receiving nothing in return.
- You still feel lousy when you leave the doctor's office
- You can't get through the phones to even make an appointment because they are so busy
- You clear a whole day in your schedule for a doctor's appointment because you know a 10am appointment will never be a 10am appointment
- You hate the office staff as much as you hate taxes
- You can't get a word in when you finally do get to see your doctor
- You spend more time reading the magazines than you do in the actual exam room
Again not trying to tell you what to do but when you read these words and more than 1 of them are true you really got to start asking yourself is this what you deserve.
So where do we go from here?
I know that even despite all the shortcomings you think that you have to give your doctor a chance and for that I say Good Luck!!
