The key message is that sleep apnea, regardless of type, should never be ignored. With timely diagnosis and adherence to evidence-based interventions, patients can reclaim restful nights and reduce health risks.

Consequences of Untreated Sleep Apnea

Allowing sleep apnea to remain untreated can result in a cascade of negative health outcomes. The repetitive lack of oxygen and sleep fragmentation leads to worsening hypertension and arrhythmias, contributing substantially to the global burden of cardiovascular disease. Untreated sleep apnea is a recognized independent risk factor for stroke, with studies showing up to a fourfold greater risk compared to unaffected individuals. Furthermore, neurocognitive impairment, depression, anxiety, and impaired workplace performance can erode the quality of life for both adults and children.

Sleep apnea has also been shown to elevate the risk of metabolic syndrome, a cluster of conditions including high blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol. The interplay between metabolic syndrome, OSA, and type 2 diabetes has become a major focus of medical research, and treating sleep apnea has been shown to improve glycemic control in diabetic patients. For drivers and those with occupations requiring vigilance, the heightened risk of motor vehicle and occupational accidents cannot be overstated.
