Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, target inflammation and are used for symptom relief, although their effectiveness may dwindle if disease progresses. Hormonal therapies—including combined oral contraceptives, progestins, and GnRH (gonadotropin-releasing hormone) agonists—work by suppressing menstruation, thereby limiting the cyclical stimulation of endometriotic tissue. While often effective, some women experience side effects or incomplete relief.
When medical management does not suffice, or when there are contraindications, surgical intervention becomes pivotal. Laparoscopic excision or ablation of endometriotic lesions can provide substantial pain relief and improve fertility in selected patients. Yet, surgery carries risks, including recurrence rates as high as 40-50% over five years, and the potential for procedural complications. For women not seeking fertility preservation and in whom other measures have failed, more aggressive procedures, such as hysterectomy with or without removal of the ovaries, may be considered. Multimodal approaches integrating physical therapy, dietary modification, and psychological support are also gaining acceptance, with numerous studies underscoring the role of multidisciplinary management in optimizing function and well-being.

Endometriosis and Infertility

Approximately 30-50% of women with endometriosis experience infertility.
